Bishop Carroll assistant football coach Roger Robben died Monday morning after returning home from a run. He was 46.

Mr. Robben, who was also teaching math at Augusta High, was a head coach at Remington, Buhler, Goddard and Augusta high schools. He was at Goddard from 2004-09 and his best season was in 2007, when the Lions finished 9-3. Mr. Robben coached Augusta from 2010-13.

“He’s just a great man, a great faith-filled man,” Carroll coach Alan Schuckman said. “Our daughters are the same age, and we’ve been friends through it all.

“… He’s a type of guy I want to surround myself with. He’s a great example of what you want to be.”

He was an assistant under Schuckman before becoming a head coach.

He has three children, Olivia, Riggs and Sylvia. Riggs was a starter at Carroll, which played in the Class 5A title game on Saturday in Pittsburg.

“He was proud of (Riggs),” Schuckman said. “Riggs had to step up, and to have his dad there as a mentor and coach was special.”

Mr. Robben was an All-City League selection at running back and linebacker in 1986 for Carroll. He later played linebacker and fullback at Kansas. He led the Big Eight Conference in tackles in 1989 and twice received All-Big Eight honorable mention honors.

Mr. Robben was an active man, even going for a run before Saturday’s title game.

“I kind of teased him,” Schuckman said with a laugh. “It was sleeting. I said, ‘Roger, what are you thinking?’ He said, ‘I have to get ready for the game.’
