Derby running game too much for South (+video)

DERBY – Derby clinched a playoff berth Friday night in a dominating 51-13 win over Wichita South.

Derby coach Brandon Clark prepared all week to stop South’s rushing attack, led by quarterback Allen Bishop. With a combination of three- and four-man fronts, Derby was able to hold South’s rushing attack out of the end zone, forcing Bishop to use his arm more.

“Well, we know their running backs and quarterback are special, so we knew we had to stop the run; that was our game plan this week,” Clark said.

Kristian Breedlove scored Derby’s first touchdown, then the next three drives ended with touchdown runs of more than 20 yards by quarterback Brady Rust. He had 132 rushing yards — playing only the first half.

“I came out tonight trying to get the win for my team, and do whatever I could,” Rust said. “On a lot of my runs the defense went after the running backs, so I pulled and my lineman gave me big holes to run through.”

Once Derby’s lead became 45 points, a running clock started. South scored 13 second-half points but suffered its fourth straight loss. Derby is 7-1 and can clinch the Class 6A-District 7 championship and a first-round home game with a win over Wichita West next week.
