Kapaun gets up early in win over North

Kapaun Mount Carmel took advantage of a couple of North miscues early, taking a 28-0 halftime lead, then held off North in the second half for a 28-7 victory Friday at Heights.

The Crusaders benefited from short fields on their first two possessions, starting at the North 15 and North 9, respectively.

Senior quarterback Brock Monty needed just four plays each time to find the end zone. He found senior Ben Hessman from the 14 for a 7-0 lead with 9:11 to play in the first quarter. Monty then ran in from the 1 for Kapaun’s second score, and the Crusaders went ahead 14-0 with 6:20 left in the first quarter.

Monty kept it up in the second quarter, finding his favorite target, senior Colter Hullings, for a 31-yard scoring pass with 6:50 left in the period. He connected with Hullings again for a 35-yard score with .3 seconds left before halftime.

At the half, Monty had completed 14 of 25 passes for 227 yards and finished 19 of 34 for 287 yards, sitting out the final half of the last quarter.

Monty didn’t just concentrate on Hullings, either. He completed passes to seven different receivers. Hullings’ scoring catches were his only two receptions of the night. Sophomore Nick Channel caught six passes for 109 yards.

The Crusaders also proved to be two-dimensional as well, calling on senior Joey Medina and junior David Akao in the first half, then going mainly with Medina in the second half. Medina finished with 90 yards in 14 carries; Akao carried five times for 20 yards.

“We have a lot of really good kids and weapons for Brock to throw to,” Kapaun coach Dan Adelhardt said.

Even though the Redskins have yet to win a game this season, their play in this game showed that there could be a few bright spots on the horizon, especially because they face two other currently winless City League schools in district play — next Thursday against East, and Southeast.

“Our kids definitely played hard, we finished the game and didn’t give up at all,” North coach Joe Belden said.

Belden said had North not given Kapaun short fields early, the Redskins might have had a better showing.

“We’re so close to getting the corner turned, and we get in our own way sometimes,” he said. “We got stopped in the red zone … you look at a few things happening differently, and it’s a tighter ballgame.

“But our kids played hard, and I’m proud of their effort.”
