West routs East to improve to 3-0
West High quarterback Chaz Capps laughed at the thought of lingering, even for a moment, on Friday night’s 50-21 win over East.
“It’s about how all the games go when you win at West,” Capps said. “Enjoy it, maybe, for a few hours and get on to the next week. We need to have a really great week of practice, go really hard and get on to the next guy.”
The next guys up are Kapaun, Northwest and Heights in what could be a season-defining stretch for West (3-0)
“We’ve got three big boys in a row, so we’ll see what we’re made of,” West coach Weston Schartz said. “We knew our opening game against Dodge City was going to be a test, then we thought we could beat North and East then those middle three games would be difficult. Hopefully we’re up for the challenge.”
East (0-3) was playing without star defensive end/tight end Xavier Kelly, a Clemson commit who sat out with a groin injury. The Aces struggled to stop West’s running attack as the Pioneers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions, including back-to-back 99 and 98-yard drives.
West’s Dominick Jones led the team with 114 rushing yards on nine carries, while D’anthony Andrews added 106 rushing yards on 12 carries. Capps rushed eight times for 96 yards and two touchdowns and also threw for two touchdowns, finding Nate Saunders and Michael Mitchell in the first half.
West was also sharp on defense, negating four turnovers with four takeaways of their own, including a 43-yard interception return by Thomas Washington to open the scoring in the second half. Washington also scored the game’s first touchdown on a 39-yard run.
“I just came out here thinking this was big because we’ve got a big game coming up after this,” Washington said. “Kapaun is going to be a huge game for us. We have to come out to play, get better and keep pushing.”
