Augusta wins threat-delayed game against El Dorado
EL DORADO — After a threat Friday forced postponement of the Augusta-El Dorado football game, Augusta came out with a 40-6 win on Sunday afternoon at BG Products Stadium.
El Dorado officials declined to comment further on Friday’s threat, citing an ongoing investigation. The threat, posted on Twitter, indicated that the game would be the target of some sort of “strike” and police entered the Augusta locker room at 5:10 p.m. on Friday, about 15 minutes before the team was supposed to start warming up.
The postponement was a surprise, obviously, but Augusta coach Jason Filbeck said his team used the layoff to good advantage.
“First we tried to stay (on Friday) and they wouldn’t let us,” he said. “We figured we were kicking off that night, just like real late. So when they finally did send us home, we got the kids and watched ‘Remember the Titans.’ We put up a movie in the gym and told them just to hang out together, because it would be a night where we didn’t have plans anyway.”
Augusta running back Raef Hilt scored four rushing touchdowns, with three in the second half.
El Dorado coach Jason Nichols was missing some team members for Saturday practice —they were taking part in the University of Kansas Band Day in Lawrence.
“I assumed that we were going to play Saturday,” he said. “Very late that night, I was told that it was going to be rescheduled for Sunday. We had practice (Saturday), came in this morning about 10 o’clock and tried to get them ready.”
The postponement gives Augusta (2-0) fewer days to prepare for a tough road trip at McPherson next Friday.
“Whether it’s 7 o’clock at night or 2 o’clock in the afternoon, kickoff is kickoff, and you really shouldn’t be looking at a clock,” Filbeck said. “At that time, time is irrelevant. In the long run, we still won a game by a pretty good margin. It just took us a little while.”
