State tennis Day 1: Andover places two in 5A singles semifinals
Andover’s Dohee Lee and Grace Ball advanced to Saturday’s Class 5A semifinals after the first day of state tennis competition Friday in Emporia.
Defending state champion Lee (25-0) won both of her matches in straight sets while Ball (23-5) overcame Maize South’s Gwyneth Schuler 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in her quarterfinal. Lee will play Carroll’s Natalie Lubbers in one semifinal while Ball meet’s Emporia Ashley DeBauge.
After finishing third in her regional, Lubbers had to play an extra match Friday, but won all three in straight sets.
In 5A doubles, the Carroll’s Breckyn Steven and Nicole Lubbers advanced to a semifinal in straight sets while Ally Burr and Makenna Gonzales of Arkansas City also reached the opposite semifinal.
Wichita Collegiate teammates Emily Ramsey and Jaya Mantovani will meet in a 3-2-1A singles semifinal after each advanced Friday in straight sets in Dodge City. Independent’s Anna Riedmiller, last year’s state runnerup, is in the other semifinal after beating her two opponents without losing a game. Riedmiller will play Hillsboro’s Allison Weber. All four semifinalists came from the Collegiate regional.
In 3-2-1A doubles Collegiate’s Hannah Osland and Allie Lindwall will meet Conway Springs’ Brittany Paul and Julie Ann Winter in one smeifinal and Haven’s Sam Stallbaumer and Mary Emile-Wagler will face Hutchinson Trinity’s Baylee Reade and Emma Lanham in the other.
Winfield’s Victoria Lybarger and Jenna Groene advanced to the 4A doubles semifinal where they will face McPherson’s Camry Holle and Emily Ediger in Winfield. Buhler’s Jessica Steffen and Kendra Nachtigal are in the other semi.
