West attacks North from all angles in rout

Already leading North 26-0 in the second quarter, West quarterback Chaz Capps found himself with two options: Either hand the ball off to his tailback on an inside give, or pull the ball back and let it rip.

Capps decided on the latter, showcasing his arm on a 14-yard fade to senior wideout Isaac Rodriguez for the fifth of the Pioneers’ 10 touchdowns en route to a 66-0 victory.

"It’s great to throw the ball," Capps said, grinning. “Whatever gets the win is what I’m all about.”

Capps finished 4-for-5 passing for 52 yards, but like many of his teammates, proved to be just as adept with his feet, rushing for a 15-yard touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter.

Fellow junior Javon Reed rushed for 122 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns. Tailback Terrell Rodriguez also managed to make the most of his 10 carries, scoring touchdowns from eight and six yards.

The trio of Tyrell Saunders, Matt Swinney and Marco Parker rounded out the scoring for West, each finding the end zone in what was a dominate display for the Pioneers ground game.

"I love to distribute the ball to everybody,” Capps said. “Whatever I can do to get as many guys the ball and get the win.”

It was another tough night for North and coach Joe Belden as the Redskins fell to 0-2.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re young and have very few kids with varsity playing experience,” said Belden. “We’ve got to take care of ourselves. We have to get things cleaned up on our end before we do anything else.”

Tyrell Saunders added a rushing touchdown for North. West’s Marcus Malcolm intercepted North quarterback Ray Robinson to set up Reed’s second touchdown and give the Pioneers a 21-0 lead.

West went on the attack early scoring on their opening drive, after all 240 pounds of Tyrell Saunders punched in the first of the Pioneers nine rushing touchdowns from four yards out.

“We’re going to watch the film tomorrow and work on the little things,” Capps said. “It’s the little things that win games.
