Carroll wastes little time against East in 56-0 victory

The one thing East showed it could do well — really well — in its season-opening loss to Kapaun Mount Carmel last week was pass the football.

Bishop Carroll took away the most basic part of that equation on Friday night in a 56-0 win at Carroll.

The Golden Eagles’ defense hardly let East quarterback Dominic Webb breathe — let alone pass — sacking him six times in the first half on the way to a 42-0 lead at the break. The final was 56-0.

“We knew we had to work on the pass rush because (Webb) can throw and they’ve got good athletes that can get down the field,” Carroll coach Alan Schuckman said. “We knew we had to get pressure on (Webb). I think people underestimate us a little bit on our team speed.”

Webb passed for 323 yards and ran for 71 yards against the Crusaders. Against Carroll, he finished with zero yards of offense — negative-13 rushing yards and 1-of-7 passing for 13 yards.

“We knew he was an athletic quarterback, somebody who could move around and do things,” said Carroll linebacker Jarrett Johnson, who finished with 2 1/2 sacks. “And we got to him.”

And after that, everything about Carroll (2-0, 2-0 City League) was brutally efficient. Quarterback Colton Howell led his team on a 66-yard scoring drive on the first series of the game, connecting with Blake Newell for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Howell finished 10-for-13 passing for 103 yards. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior also ran for 41 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown run.

“The thing we talk about is consistency, of all 11 guys doing their job,” Howell said. “I thought we did that tonight, and it started with the offensive line, up front, setting the tone.”

Carroll’s special teams did more than their part in the first half, returning two punts for touchdowns in the first half – a 52-yard return by Josh Hornback and a 58-yard return by Kansas State commit Denzel Goolsby with 53 seconds left in the second quarter. Carroll also recovered an onside kick after its first touchdown.

Goolsby finished with 177 rushing yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns.

“Our special teams killed us,” East coach Brian Byers said. “Once it got out of hand, I told (the team) we were pulling our starters. We’re not very deep and we can’t risk kids getting hurt ... I think we can win some games this year. We’ve got some good athletes.”

Carroll’s first-string offense got one series in the second half, capped by a 23-yard touchdown run from Goolsby to make the score 49-0.

The defensive starters sat the entire second half and yielded just 91 yards of offense.

“We watched a lot of film, saw they had some athletes,” said Carroll safety Mark Quaney, who had two fumble recoveries. “We had a spy on their quarterback and the guys up front kept getting to him.”
