Boys tennis: Day 1 state update

SINGLES

CLASS 6A

Hutchinson’s Garrett Severud, who finished second in regionals, lost his first match, but defeated SM East’s Quin Napier 9-2 in the loser’s bracket before falling in his final match of the day. South’s Evan Kruse won his first match of the day, 6-1, 6-2 over Napier, but lost his next two matches. Derby’s Bowman also won a match in the loser’s bracket.

CLASS 5A

Arkansas City senior Berett Hollis advances to the semifinals, where he will face teammate Pierce Klaassen for the right to go to the championship match. But Hollis had to work for it, as Maize’s Brennen Sanders was able to take six games off of him in a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Klaassen, who finished fourth in regionals, had perhaps the most impressive day, as he knocked off regional winner Devin McAfee of Pittsburg and Mill Valley’s Parker Billings both in straight sets without losing a game.

Eisenhower’s Luke Howard is through to the semifinals after defeating Topeka West’s Cameron Gaudreau 6-1, 6-0 in the second round, then Andover’s Jaydn Richardson 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. He will face Bishop Carroll’s Rodney Steven, the defending champion, as Steven won in straight sets in both of his matches to make it back to the semifinals.

The first five seeds from the Arkansas City regional last week all advanced to the quarterfinals, as the state semifinals are made up of the top four seeds from the same regional in Hollis, Steven, Howard, and Klaassen.

CLASS 4A

Collegiate junior Lakelin Conrad advances to the semifinals with two stellar matches, only dropping two games combined. His most impressive victory came in the quarterfinals against Independence’s Zach Schroeder, who had just two losses on his record, as Conrad won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Conrad will play McPherson’s top seed Andrew Snell.

McPherson junior Andrew Snell will face Conrad in the semifinals after his own impressive route, as he dropped just six games in total and won both of his matches in straight sets. His best win came over Independence’s Luke Bass in the quarterfinals in 6-1, 6-2 fashion.

Collegiate senior Easton Ewy ran into Parsons’ Rudra Dixit in the semifinals and lost a competitive 6-3, 6-4 match. McPherson’s Jarrod Nowak also reached the quarterfinals, but bowed out to the overall top seed in Bishop Miege’s Will Grier in perhaps the best match of the day in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

CLASS 3-1A

Norwich senior Davis Roe cruised his way to the semifinals, winning in straight sets over both of his opponents to advance to a highly-anticipated matchup against the heavy tournament favorite in Sacred Heart’s Stratton Brown.

Sterling advanced both of its entries to the quarterfinals in Kyler Comley and William Weiner. Comley lost his quarterfinals matchup against Maranatha’s Daniel Siemers, while Weiner upset Central Plains’ Devin Ryan to advance to the semifinals against Siemers.

DOUBLES

CLASS 6A

Northwest’s doubles team of Nickel and Haight lost their first match, but defeated Campus’ Talbert and Chan in the loser’s bracket before losing its second match. Derby’s team of Palmer and Simmons also won a match in the loser’s bracket before bowing out.

CLASS 5A

After winning City League and regionals, Bishop Carroll’s duo of Jack Oxler and Ty Stranhoner advanced to the semifinals after beating Topeka Seaman’s team of Mike Latendresse and Andrew Gill, 6-4, 6-3. They will face the league- and regional-winning team from Maize, Kaden Jobe and Chase Schreiner, who advanced to the semifinals after surviving a tough second-round match against Kapaun’s Andrew Klimiuk and Daniel House.

Eisenhower’s Tyler McGreevy and Colin Anderson advanced to the quarterfinals, then gave the regional-winning doubles team of Zach Shima and Kyle Rice a three-set thriller of a match, ultimately dropping it 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

CLASS 4A

The Collegiate doubles team of Austin Gartner and Matt Regehr won both of their matches in straight sets to advance to the semifinals, where they will square off against McPherson’s duo of Nolan Schrader and Kaden Stewart. Schrader and Stewart registered the most impressive win of the day, notching the seeding upset over Independence’s Sam Hilger and Will Schabel that could be a huge boost in the final team standings as well.

Collegiate’s second doubles team of Ben Murphy and Max Wheeler also registered the seeding upset over Topeka Hayden’s regional-winning team of Sean Sandstrom and Hayden Federico to advance to the semifinals. Murphy and Wheeler will face off against Abilene’s Jacob Berven and Jase West.

Trinity Academy’s Luke Prohaska and George Kriwiel won two straight matches to make it to the quarterfinals, but lost to Berven and West in a competitive match that ended 6-4, 6-3.

CLASS 3-1A

The Conway Springs duo of Jacob Winter and Lucas Mies won both of their matches in straight sets to advance to the semifinals against the top overall seed of KC Christian’s Mitchell Paul and Jackson VanderArk.

Hutch Trinity’s Dylan DeLuca and Jacob Harcrow cruised their way to the semifinals by winning two matches in a row in straight sets. DeLuca and Harcrow advance to the semifinals and will play another top seed in Central Plains’ duo of Kade Beck and Brett Liebl.
