Flint Hills National to host 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur

Andover’s Flint Hills National Golf Club has been selected to host the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association announced Monday.

The Junior Amateur, whose past champions include Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Hunter Mahan and Johnny Miller, will be played July 17-22 on the Tom Fazio-designed course, which opened in 1997.

It will be the third USGA event for Flint Hills National. The club hosted the 2001 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 2007 USGA Senior Amateur.

“Flint Hills National Golf Club is honored to be selected as the host site for the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur,” club president Jeff Johnson said in a statement. “We look forward to partnering with the USGA and delivering a world-class venue that showcases amateur golf and the surrounding Andover and Wichita communities.”

The first U.S. Junior Amateur was played in 1948. It is open to male amateurs who have not reached their 18th birthday by the conclusion of the championship and who have a handicap index not exceeding 6.4.

The Junior Amateur will be the 22nd USGA event contested in Kansas. Newton’s Sand Creek Station hosted the final U.S. Amateur Public Links Chamipionship in July.
