Two sets of Wichita sisters advance in USGA national golf tournament
Two different sets of sisters, both from Wichita, recently advanced to match play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball.
Kate Tilma, a 21-year-old who is a junior on the Wichita State women’s golf team, and Meg Tilma, a senior at Classical who has signed to play golf for Oklahoma, advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the national tournament played at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, this week.
Meanwhile, Avery and Emerie Schartz, both students at Andover, also reached match play after qualifying in eighth place during stroke play this past Saturday at the prestigious USGA event.
The Tilma sisters were in danger of not qualifying for the round-of-32 bracket after firing a 4-over round of 75 in the first round of stroke play. But the duo rallied to shoot a 3-under 68 during the second round to make the final score on the cut line for match play.
From there, the Tilma sisters upset eighth-seeded Mia Clausen and Vivi Yen, 5 and 3, then won 2-up over Carly Marshall and Ava Osborne on Tuesday to advance to the final eight teams. In the quarterfinals, the Tilmas lost to eventual champions Natalie Yen and Asia Young, 4 and 2.
After shooting a 3-under score of 139 in qualifying, the Schartz sisters tied for the eighth-best score. They were seeded 13th in the bracket and were edged out, 4 and 3, by finalists Fay Jia and Cherry Zhang in the opening round.
