▪ Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet continued to put miles on the stationary bike during Saturday morning’s shoot-around. He stretched. He watched. He won’t play against the Hornets.
▪ What does that mean for next week’s tournament in Florida? It is difficult to think VanVleet will be 100 percent by Thursday, but we won’t know until then. He will continue to take it day by day.
The Advocare Invitational always figured to be a tough test for WSU. Possible second-round opponent Xavier is 3-0 after Friday’s 86-70 thumping of Michigan on Michigan’s home floor.
Playing Emporia State is a chance for the Shockers to work on how they’re going to win without VanVleet, instead of waiting for his undetermined return.
This would be a good time for freshman Ty Taylor to improve. He will get a shot at point guard. Also expect to see plenty of John Robert Simon, who isn’t as athletically gifted as Taylor but knows the system and can get things working in the right way.
▪ Coach Gregg Marshall would also like to see many of his players play harder than they did in Tuesday’s loss at Tulsa. Expect an emphasis on floorburns and hustle against the Hornets.
▪ The MVC is enduring a difficult week, one started by WSU’s loss at Tulsa. It got much worse when South Dakota State won at Illinois State 83-67 and New Mexico routed Loyola 75-51.
