▪  Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall seems pleased with the play of guards Landry Shamet and Conner Frankamp.

The mystery shifts to the front court, where there are many bodies and many possibilities.

We’re waiting on somebody to grab hold of the center job. We expect that to be Shaq Morris, especially after he made 9 of 11 shots and carried the Shockers in the final minutes of Saturday’s exhibition game.

If Morris does that, can Rauno Nurger or Darral Willis play with him? The Shockers used that big lineup some in the exhibition.

Where does Markis McDuffie fit? If he plays power forward, that sets off other moves. If he plays small forward, the Shockers can feature a big look.

One thing is for sure — coach Gregg Marshall wants McDuffie to shoot with more confidence. He went 1 for 5 from the field against Augusta (Ga) and Marshall wasn’t pleased with his shooting form.

Of those five shots, one came in the lane. McDuffie has to use his driving ability and quicks to score in the lane.

▪  South Carolina State returns four players with some degree of starting experience. They’re used to playing guarantee games and were competitive to some degree in losses at Kansas State (68-66) and Ohio State (73-57) last sesason.

▪  WSU’s schedule throws a challenge at an inexperienced team. The Shockers will go through the hype of opening night on Friday and then play what appears to be a stronger team on Sunday when Long Beach State visits. Ken Pomeroy projects the 49ers No. 117 nationally. Sports Illustrated ranks them No. 91.

So that’s not much scouting or refocusing time for a team that probably needs it. Long Beach State, however, is at a bigger disadvantage. It plays at home on Friday.
