Different look on defense

Indiana State entered Wednesday with a solid offensive resume. In 12 Missouri Valley Conference games, they averaged almost 69 points, tops in the conference.

The Shockers held them below 60 for the third time in conference play. In past seasons, the Sycamores could sometimes beat WSU’s press and produce some easy baskets with former guard Jake Odum running things. On Wednesday, the Shockers pressed and remained organized in the half-court to throw up a wall.

“You can’t breathe,” Indiana State coach Greg Lansing said. “We’re not quite ready for the stuff that they give, with those veterans and their athleticism and the way that they play.”

The Shockers held a third straight opponent under 36-percent shooting. In the past two games, Missouri State and Indiana State combined for 29 baskets and 31 turnovers.

“We wanted to make it hard for them to get the ball across half-court, but then at the same time be ready for whatever they had in the half-court,” WSU guard Tekele Cotton said. “Their bigs can shoot. Their whole team can shoot. That was a big emphasis.”

Baker in the top 20

WSU junior Ron Baker is one of 20 players on the late-season watch list for the Wooden Award, a National Player of the Year award.

Baker, a junior from Scott City, entered Wednesday’s game averaging 15.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists with 19 blocks.

Around 1,000 media members will vote on the honor in March. The winner is announced the weekend of April 10-12.

Worth noting

Wichita State freshman Zach Brown missed his second game with a concussion. … WSU guard Fred VanVleet grabbed three steals to give him 150 for his career and move into fourth on WSU’s list. He passsed Aubrey Sherrod and P.J. Couisnard, who were tied for fourth with 148. He had four assists and totals 419, one behind third-place Bob Trogele. … WSU defeated Indiana State for the fifth straight time.
