Wichita State’s Markis McDuffie will undergo surgery on right knee
Wichita State sophomore forward Markis McDuffie will undergo surgery on his right knee on Friday, he said in a text message.
The surgery is expected to sideline him up to eight weeks.
“I should be back September, beginning of October,” McDuffie said earlier this month during WSU’s exhibition tour in Canada. “That’s why I’m trying to get the surgery now. I wanted to have it quickly.”
McDuffie suffered a slight tear in his meniscus during practice before WSU’s four-game trip. He attempted to avoid surgery and minimize the damage with rest and rehab. He played in the final two games in Montreal and said the knee stiffened up after the second game.
“It was great that he was even able to play, because his health is of foremost importance,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said after McDuffie’s first game on the trip. “He was very active. We’ll see. We’ll determine whether or not if he needs (surgery) after he gets back and how he responds to these minutes he played.”
McDuffie, from Paterson, N.J., is a key figure for the Shockers. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds and earned Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year honors last season.
WSU opens the season with an exhibition game on Nov. 5 against Augusta (Ga.).
