Watch those fouls
Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall’s experience tells him referees like to call a foul early in the second half. He often sits a starter with two fouls after halftime, especially if his team is on defense.
On Wednesday, he sent center Bush Wamukota out to begin the second half, his first action of the game. It paid off when he deflected a pass on Bradley’s first possession and ran the floor to take a pass from Tekele Cotton and dunk for a 37-22 lead. On Bradley’s next possession, he played solid defense and forced a missed shot by Mike Shaw.
“That was a big play in retrospect,” Marshall said of the steal and dunk. “Generally, there’s a quick whistle to start the second half.”
Get to the line
Up 59-57, Marshall put the ball in the hands of guard Ron Baker at the top of the key. Baker used a screen to drive and drew a foul on center Jermaine Morgan, who tried to wall him off from the lane.
“We’re trying to get the (big man) out to hedge and I attacked the hedge and got fouled,” Baker said. “Any time you’ve got a chance to drive to the rim and you’ve got a (center) in front of you, it’s a tough position for a big guy to be in.”
Marshall likes Baker’s height in that situation, especially against the Braves who played forwards at guard because of injuries and suspensions. Their size caused WSU problems defensively and on the boards.
“He’s a little bigger and able to create a little more separation and space,” Marshall said. “And equally as good a free throw shooters as Fred (VanVleet).”
Baker made one of two free throws to give WSU a 60-57 lead with 13 seconds to play.
He scored 14 points, giving him 982 for his career.
Holland sidelined
Wichita State freshman guard Ria’n Holland missed Wednesday’s game with a sore left foot, pain he described as running across the top of his foot.
Holland played in 22 games and averages 2.1 points and 0.9 rebounds. He played five minutes in Saturday’s loss at Northern Iowa.
Worth noting
WSU defeated Bradley for an 11th straight time, the most consecutive wins by a Braves opponents. The previous 10 came by an average of 23.5 points … Bradley guard Omari Grier played after serving a one-game suspension for his role in last week’s legal issues that benched three Braves. According to the Peoria Journal Star, Warren Jones was arrested last week after using Grier’s identification to enter a Peoria nightclub. Ka’Darryl Bell was with Jones. Grier was not at the club … Marshall spoke at Bradley’s booster luncheon on Wednesday on the campus.
