Wichita State sets date for Saint Louis, adds exhibition game to schedule

The NCAA Division I portion of Wichita State’s men’s basketball non-conference schedule is complete.

The Shockers open the season on Nov. 5 with an exhibition game against NCAA Division II Augusta (Ga.). The regular-season starts against South Carolina State on Nov. 11 at Koch Arena. Two days later, the Shockers play host to Long Beach State in a game connected to the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

The lone remaining date will be filled by an NCAA Division II team, according to interim athletic director Darron Boatright, in late November after the Shockers return from the tournament in the Bahamas.

WSU will play Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 20 and Saint Louis on Dec. 6, both at Koch Arena, in other games recently set by contract.

▪  Augusta is coached by Dip Metress, who played for WSU coach Gregg Marshall, then an assistant coach, at Belmont Abbey (N.C.) in 1987-88.

▪  Boatright said WSU is evaluating the Charleston Classic and the Cancun Challenge as possible tournaments for 2018. The Shockers last played in Cancun in 2012. A trip to Charleston (S.C.) would take Marshall back to the city where he worked as an assistant coach from 1988-96 at the College of Charleston.

▪  Times for WSU’s four exhibition games in Canada next month are set. The Shockers play at the University of Quebec at Montreal on Aug. 6 (noon), at Carleton University on Aug. 7 (2 p.m.) in Ottawa, at McGill University on Aug. 9 (8 p.m.) in Quebec and vs. IndiSport All-Stars on Aug. 10 (3:30 p.m.) in Quebec.
