Carter on the bench
Wichita State senior forward Darius Carter played a season-low six minutes, five in the first half. Fouls were part of the problem, but back pain is the bigger issue.
Back spasms benched him for the second half of Sunday’s win over Drake. Against Loyola, WSU coach Gregg Marshall said the back appeared to bother Carter again. He made 1 of 4 shots and grabbed one rebound and Marshall chose to go with freshman Shaq Morris over Carter in the second half, in part to keep Carter from making the injury worse.
“He didn’t look like himself,” Marshall said. “He looked like he was favoring the back. He said he could go,but then he was also missing layups.”
Fouls limited to Morris to 13 minutes. He made a free throw and grabbed five rebounds.
Fred on fire
Shocker guard Fred VanVleet missed a shot against Loyola, which is new. He still produced a superb offensive game with 27 points and three assists.
In two meetings, VanVleet is 15 of 21 from the field against the Ramblers, 5 of 8 from three-point range. He made all five of his shots and scored 14 points in a 67-53 win earlier this season in Chicago. He also handed out 10 assists to tie his career high.
Last season, he matched his previous career high with 22 points, on 6-of-6 shooting in a win at Loyola.
Worth noting
Wichita State guard Conner Frankamp took part in workouts two hours before the game. He was not on the bench during the game. Frankamp, who is practicing with the team, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of DUI. … WSU sophomore walk-on Zach Bush underwent surgery on his right foot Wednesday to fix a stress fracture. Bush will miss the rest of the season. He played in three games. … Marshall finished in third place in the first round of the Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge and is one of 24 coaches in the second round that ends Feb. 15. Fans can vote at espn.com/infiniti. … Cotton received the ball from Sunday’s win over Drake in a brief pregame ceremony. He played in his 108th victory at WSU, most in program history. … Kansas City Royals Brandon Finnegan and Lane Adams took part in a three-point shooting promotion during the first half. Adams, who committed to play basketball at Missouri State before choosing baseball, easily won. They were in town for the team’s promotional tour. … The Shockers improved their series lead to 22-9. They are 4-0 against Loyola since the Ramblers joined the Missouri Valley Conference.
