Wichita State’s Sam Tewes, 8th-round pick, signs with St. Louis Cardinals
Wichita State pitcher Sam Tewes signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com.
Tewes, a a redshirt sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., earned a bonus of $100,000, according to Callis, after being selected in the eighth round of the draft last week. He will rehab from elbow surgery with the Cardinals after spending three seasons at WSU, two of them injury-shortened.
Tewes tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on March 11 in the first inning against Cal State-Fullerton and underwent ligament replacement surgery on March 31. Tewes went 8-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 2014 to earn Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball.
He made five starts in 2015 before shoulder inflammation sidelined him, a condition he does not believe is related to the elbow injury. He returned healthy for 2016 and made four starts as WSU’s No. 1 starter before tearing his ligament. He went 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA before the injury ended his season.
Cowley College first baseman Caleb Eldridge, from Edmond, Okla., signed with Philadelphia on Wednesday, he said in a text message. Eldridge, drafted in the 20th round, signed with WSU after hitting .391 with a team-leading 16 home runs and 66 RBI, in addition to 18 doubles.
Pitcher Alex Segal, a lefty from Scottsdale, Ariz., said he expects to attend WSU. Toronto drafted him in the 38th round. He is playing for the Midland Redskins in Ohio this summer.
