Shockers drop series finale to Illinois State
There was no repeat of Saturday’s miracle finish for Wichita State.
The Shockers dropped the series finale to Illinois State, 8-6, on Sunday in Normal, Ill., after rallying from nine runs down over the final three innings for a 15-12 win on Saturday.
Down 8-3 in the eighth, WSU struck for three runs to cut an 8-3 deficit to 8-6 on RBI singles from Mikel Mucha and Alec Bohm before the tying runs were stranded on first and second.
WSU went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Sunday’s loss gave Illinois State (17-32, 7-10 MVC) the series, two games to one.
The Shockers (19-33, 8-10) took a 3-0 lead in the second. Chase Rader was hit by a pitch; and after two outs, Taylor Sanagorski walked and Trey Vickers doubled in Rader. Travis Young singled in Sanagorski and Vickers.
However, Illinois State scored two in the bottom of the second and four in the third for a 6-3 lead.
Owen Miller’s two-run homer in the sixth prove to be the Redbirds’ winning runs.
WSU missing several scoring opportunities. Young reached on a error in the first and was sacrificed to second by Josh DeBacker. Bohm and Jenista struck out to end the threat.
In the third, Bohm and Jenista singled. However, Rader, Ritter and Dayton Dugas were retired to end the inning.
Notes: WSU batted 7 for 21 with runners on base, 5 for 14 with runners in scoring position and 7 for 17 batting with two outs. . . . WSU has lost series to Evansville, Southern Illinois and Illinois State. It has won series against Missouri State and Bradley. . . . The Shockers stranded 10 baserunners, six in scoring position. ... WSU scored 17 runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings in the series. . . Greyson Jenista’s single in the third extended his hitting streak to nine games. He’s hitting .359 during that stretch. . . .WSU is 4-18 on the road. . . . Vickers had two hits and is batting .456 in his last 16 games. . . . WSU is tied with Evansville for fifth place in the Valley. . . The Shocks turned in their 20th errorless game but have made nine error is the last 16 games.. . . . WSU starters now have a 6.08 ERA while the bullpen is 6.22. . . . In the last seven games, WSU starting pitchers have gone just 26 2/3 innings. During that stretch, they have allowed 29 earned runs for a 9.81 ERA.
