Wichita State overcomes nine-run hole, beats Illinois State 15-12

Wichita State wiped out a nine-run deficit in the final three innings en route to a 15-12 victory over Illinois State on Saturday in Normal, Ill.

The Shockers trailed 9-1 after five innings, scored twice in the top of the sixth then allowed three in the bottom of the inning and trailed 12-3.

Travis Young and Luke Ritter hit homers in the win. Young hit a grand slam to spark a seven-run seventh. Ritter hit a two-out, three-run homer in the ninth.

In danger of being run-ruled, the Shockers (19-32, 8-9) began their comeback by sending 10 men to the plate in the seventh. Josh DeBacker walked and Greyson Jenista singled. Chase Rader singled in DeBacker. Ritter walked and Taylor Sanagorski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in Jenista. Eaton singled in Rader. After two outs, Young hit his grand slam to pull the Shockers within 12-10.

WSU got a within 12-11 in the eighth when Eaton singled in Jenista.

The ninth started well for the Shockers when Vickers reached on third baseman Ryan Hutchinson’s second error of the game. Young struck out and DeBacker reached on a fielder’s choice as Bret Fehr, running for Vickers, was forced at second for the second out.

Jenista walked and Rader, who had two strikes, singled in DeBacker with the tying run. Then Ritter, with two strikes, hit his third homer of the season, a three-run shot to left.

Illinois State (16-32, 6-10) had scored in every inning in taking a 9-1 lead after five innings. In the final three innings, WSU outscored the Redbirds 12-0.

Notes: With the win, WSU climbed to fifth in the Valley.… Vickers continued his hitting surge with two hits. He is batting .453 (24-53) in his last 15 games.… WSU his hitting .319 (115-361) in its last 10 games.… WSU improves to 4-17 on the road.… Before the sixth inning, WSU had received 12 walks and one hit batter in the series, and none of those had scored.
