Errors help send WSU baseball to 6-4 loss at Illinois State
Wichita State’s baseball team handed Illinois State five unearned runs and lost 6-4 on Friday in Normal, Ill.
In addition, the Shockers stranded 17 baserunners, nine in scoring position.
The end of the game was typical of WSU’s luck. Trailing 6-4, Trey Vickers and pinch-hitter Chase Rader singled to start the ninth inning. Travis Young sacrificed the runners to second and third, then Alec Bohm hit a line drive to ISU pitcher Jack Landwehr who caught it and fired to second to double up Rader, ending the game.
The Redbirds’ four-run second inning put WSU in a hole. After one out, Shocker starter Cody Tyler walked two batters, then a throwing error by Bohm loaded the bases. Tyler struck out the next batter, but walked ninth-hole hitter Brian Rodemoyer to force home the first run. Daniel Dwyer, who had half of Illinois State’s six hits, then hit a double to left, scoring three runs.
Illinois State made it 5-2 in the fourth, taking advantage of by second baseman Luke Ritter.
Bohm and Greyson Jenista singled with two outs in the first and scored on Gunnar Troutwine’s triple to give WSU a 2-0 lead. In the seventh, Troutwine singled and Zach Reding reached on an error. Dayton Dugas singled to load the bases. Josh DeBacker drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Troutwine, and Trey Vickers’ sacrifice fly pulled WSU within 5-4. However, Tanner Kirk hit a shallowed fly to right; and after Young walked, Bohm flied out to the warning track in left.
