TCU knocks off Wichita State women’s tennis in NCAA opener

Wichita State won the doubles point, but TCU won four singles matches to defeat the Shockers 4-3 in NCAA women’s regional tennis Friday in Coral Gables, Fla.

Third-seeded TCU (16-6) advances to Saturday’s second round. Second-seeded WSU (27-4) ends its season tied for the school record for dual victories with the 2005-06 team.

TCU’s Seda Arantekin won the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 7-6(7-3) over Gabriela Porubin to clinch the match. She was bumped up from No. 2 when TCU’s Marie Norris, from Burdett, was removed from the lineup before the match.

Arantekin won six of the first seven points in the tiebreaker.

Porubin and Julia Schiller defeated Arantekin and Caroline Wegner 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. WSU’s Giulia Guidetti and Abby Stevens won the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3.

Guidetti improved to 39-5, a WSU record for wins, with her 6-2, 7-5 win over Aleksandra Zenovka at No. 4 singles. WSU’s Aleks Trifunovic defeated Mia King 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Porubin will play in the NCAA individual championships beginning May 25 in Tulsa.
