Wichita State’s Cody Tyler shuts out Southern Illinois

Wichita State sophomore Cody Tyler was on target again.

Tyler pitched his second complete game of the season, shutting out Southern Illinois 8-0 in Friday on Carbondale, Ill.

Tyler (3-2) allowed four hits and no SIU baserunner reached third base. In fact, only one reached second. He struck out five and did not walk a batter in winning his third straight.

Tyler turned in a complete game victory against Missouri State on April 15th, then got the win against Bradley on April 22.

WSU (16-25, 6-4 MVC) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Alec Bohm led off with a double, then Trey Vickers singled home pinch-runner Travis Young.

Another double led to the Shockers’ second run. Greyson Jenista hit a one-out double in the sixth and scored on Chase Rader’s single.

The Shockers erupted for five in the eighth, sending 10 batters to the plate and helped by an SIU errpr error which allowed two runs to score.

Rader went 3 for 4 anf Dayton Dugas was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

The threat of rain forced another change in the weekend schedule, with WSU and SIU playing a single game instead of a planned doubleheader. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the series will conclude Sunday.

Notes: In his last three starts Tyler has gone 25 innings, allowing 22 hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts. His ERA during that span is 1.80.… It was the Shockers’s fourth shutout of the season.… WSU was 7 for 17 batting with runners in scoring position and 8 for 23 with runners on base. SIU was 0 for 9 with runners on base.… The win was WSU’s third in 14 road games.… Vickers is 11 for 18 in his last five games (.611).… Zach Lewis (1-6, 5.18) will pitch for WSU Saturday against Joey Marciano (3-4, 4.04).
