Evansville drops Wichita State 7-2
Wichita State dropped a 7-2 Missouri Valley Conference baseball game at Evansville on Saturday with an oddity: two interference calls against the Shockers in the same game.
In the second inning, WSU (12-19, 1-1 MVC) had runners on first and third with two outs. Trey Vickers tried to steal second base and the Evansville catcher, Boomer Synek, threw the ball into center field. But the batter, Travis Young, was called out to end the inning because he interfered with the catcher.
In the fifth inning, the Shockers had the bases loaded and no outs. Greyson Jenista hit a slow roller to Evansville first baseman Eric McKibban, who threw to second base, forcing out Tanner Kirk. Kirk was called for interference, giving Evansville a double play. The interference call put the other runners back at their original bases, and Ryan Tinkham flied out to left to end the inning.
Evansville took control in the second inning, scoring four runs. The Aces’ Jonathan Ramon, who hit a three-run homer on Friday, followed suit Saturday with his ninth homer, another three-run shot in the seventh. Ramon has driven in eight runs in the two games.
WSU (12-19) scored for the first time in the sixth inning. Gunnar Troutwine walked and Chase Rader singled. Dugas singled in Troutwine and, after a double play, Luke Ritter singled in Rader.
After yielding the four runs in the second, WSU starter Cody Tyler (0-2) retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced.
Notes — Evansville turned three double plays.… Zach Lewis (0-5, 5.67 ERA) will pitch Sunday for the Shockers in the rubber game.… Evansville’s Brandon Gomer won his first game (1-3) despite hitting three Shockers. Gomer has hit 11 batters this season.… Tinkham is 1 for his last 14 and 5 for his last 32.… WSU is 1-18 when trailing after seven innings.… The Shockers are 2-11 on the road. Evansville is 9-2 at home.
