Back on the boards
Shaq Morris punctuated his bounce-back night with a soaring dunk, after slipping a screen, for a three-point play and a 46-27 lead.
He finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes. While he ended up with four fouls, he spread them out more efficiently than Tuesday, when he played nine minutes against Vanderbilt.
The Shocker big again battled fouls – Morris, Anton Grady and Ruano Nurger all ended the first half with two. With help from the guards, they held up well enough
“Our goal was to deny them as much as we could,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “Our post players did a great job. Rauno Nurger probably did the best job. Shaq did a great job – he blocked some shots for us tonight.”
Early timeout
Arizona coach Sean Miller called a timeout 50 seconds into the game, after the Shockers forced a jumpball with a full-court press.
He didn’t need to change strategy. He wanted to reset the clock and give his team the full 10 seconds to cross halfcourt. After the jumpball, the Wildcats had three seconds to cross.
“In my mind, against them on the first possession, it was a turnover,” Miller said. “We weren’t going to be able to inbound the ball full court on a spot throw-in in three seconds. “I decided to get off to a good start.”
WSU’s Ron Baker figured out Miller’s reasoning.
“But that was kind of a statement from the go that we were going to start the game playing hard,” Baker said.
Worth noting
WSU is 4-2 against favored seeds. Thursday’s game was the first against a Pac 12 opponent in WSU’s 13 NCAA appearances… A First Four team has advanced at least to the round of 32 every season since the format in 2011, starting with VCU’s run to the Final Four… WSU leads the series 2-1 against Arizona… Arizona lost at Southern California 89-78 in 2013, its largest margin of defeat before Thursday.
