Happy in line
Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet scored two points and handed out four assists in 21 minutes, numbers that won’t attract much attention.
Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson noticed. He noticed that those stats didn’t appear to concern VanVleet in the least.
“Let me tell you why I love this kid,” Hinson said. “I shake Fred’s hand tonight. He’s smiling and he’s happy. There are other teams in this conference, including mine, that you’ve got players that are used to being the leading scorer, the best player … they get two points after a win and they’re going through the line with their head down and they’re upset. That’s the difference between that kid and most every other kid in the country.”
Worth noting
WSU freshman Rauno Nurger played four minutes, his first action since Dec. 31 at Drake. He missed two games due to illness … WSU sophomore Zach Bush said he will miss six weeks of practice while recovering from a stress reaction in his right foot. Bush, a walk-on, played in three games this season … A camera crew from CBS covered Wednesday’s game to work on a story about WSU’s Fred VanVleet. No air date is decided … Park Hill (Mo.) guard Landry Shamet and St. Anthony (N.J.) forward Markis McDuffie are among the 823 seniors nominated for the McDonald’s All American Game. The game is April 1 at Chicago’s United Center … WSU’s six first-half turnovers equaled or surpassed its total in four games … SIU is 0-5 in the MVC for the first time since 1987.
