Fan voting for the greatest five Wichita State basketball players went somewhat as predicted: Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker go immediately to the list.

The Shockers’ All-American duo, who will finish their collegiate careers in this month’s postseason, were ranked fourth (VanVleet) and fifth (Baker) in voting by readers at Kansas.com. They join three Wichita State legends on the starting five.

Xavier McDaniel was the leading vote-getter. He received 35 percent of the first-place votes and was named on 78 percent of all ballots.

Dave Stallworth, an All-American from the 1960s, was a distant second. They trade top spots in Bob Lutz’s list.

Third in both lists was Antoine Carr, the Wichita product who stayed home and starred from 1979 to 1983. He received more total votes than Stallworth, but Stallworth had more first-place votes.

VanVleet and Baker easily outdistanced Cliff Levingston for the fourth and fifth spots. In Lutz’s list, VanVleet is sixth, Levingston seventh and Baker eighth.

The fans’ second five were Levingston, Warren Armstrong, Cleanthony Early, Cleo Littleton and Tekele Cotton. The only difference between Lutz’s 10 and the fans’ was Lutz had Cheese Johnson at No. 10. He was 12th in fan voting, behind P.J. Couisnard at No. 11.
