Willie Schwanke’s seven strong innings lift Wichita State past Sam Houston State

Wichita State’s bullpen needed a boost after giving up an eight-run lead in Friday’s loss. Willie Schwanke provided it Saturday.

His seven innings of scoreless pitching helped the Shockers defeat Sam Houston State 2-0 at Eck Stadium.

“It felt good, I was able to locate both sides,” Schwanke said. “Gunnar (Troutwine) was setting up real nice for me behind the plate. It’s something I took personal, using our bullpen so much last night, I wanted to come out and give a good outing, so I was able to come set and stick to my game plan.”

Schwanke allowed four singles and no Bearkat got past second base. Schwanke struck out a career-high eight.

“Willie was fantastic tonight,” Butler said. “Three pitches for a strike, pounded the ball on both sides of the plate and really pitched well. Cody Tyler came in and finished the game in the eighth and the ninth, he was really good also.”

Tyler went two innings, allowing a double and getting a strikeout in preserving the shutout.

Greyson Jenista, making his second start as a freshman, got the only run-producing hit of the game. His two-run double in the fourth inning scored Ryan Tinkham and Troutwine.

“Greyson Jenista, a true freshman, waffles a ball up the middle to score two runs,” Butler said. “It was a true game tonight, I really enjoyed the game tonight, it was true baseball.”

Sam Houston State threatened in the eighth inning, getting a one-out double off Tyler. Tyler got a groundout and walked a batter, but Sam Houston’s double-steal attempt was thrwarted by Troutwine’s throw to third to end the inning.

“Honestly, I had no idea that was going to happen like that,” Troutwine said. “In that situation, that type of thing usually doesn’t happen. I caught the curveball on my right side and just kind of flipped it over there and luckily (Alex) Bohm was right there and tagged him.”
