Shocker women suffer 21st loss

Wichita State’s women’s basketball team couldn’t hold onto a seven-point halftime lead and lost 53-49 to Illinois State on Thursday night at Koch Arena.

Even with leading scorer Rangie Bessard on the bench with two fouls for most of the first half, the Shockers pulled ahead 29-22.

“I tried to come out there and give it my all. Got into a foul trouble,” Bessard said. “I still kept faith in my team. I know they can do it without me – I’ve seen them do it without me.”

Bessard finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

WSU (7-21, 4-13 MVC) was outscored 18-9 in the third quarter by Illinois State (8-20, 6-11), which got 20 points from Octavia Fowler and 17 from Vira Livingston.

The Shockers never got within one possession after an Illinois State layup with 8:42 to play.

“I look at these 21 losses an opportunity to teach,” WSU coach Jody Adams said. “To challenge them. To look at themselves, look at this team. Our four leaders are all on the same page. Keeping teaching. I’m very, very proud of them.”

TaQuandra Mike led WSU with 17 points and five rebounds. Bessard had 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting with eight rebounds. WSU had eight assists on 21 baskets.

WSU closes the regular season at home Saturday against Indiana State. The Shockers are assured of playing Bradley at 4 p.m. March 10 in a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament play-in game at Moline, Ill.
