Wichita State Shockers

Wichita State baseball loses fourth straight

Wichita State continued to hit the ball Saturday in New Mexico. Unfortunately for the Shockers, they continued to walk opposing batters.

Despite outhitting New Mexico 11-8, WSU dropped an 8-4 decision to the Lobos.

The loss was WSU’s fourth in a row and dropped its road record to 0-3.

Willie Schwanke started for WSU and was perfect through three innings. A bunt single by Luis Gonzalez broke up the perfect game, but Schwanke wiggled off the hook, leaving two runners aboard.

In the fifth, the roof fell in. The first seven batters reached base against Schwanke, and Cody Tyler was summoned. Six runs scored in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.

In all, the Shockers walked six and half of them scored. One run was balked home.

Gunnar Troutwine got WSU on the board in the seventh with a two-run homer, his second of the season.

Pinch-hitter Chase Rader opened the ninth with a single. Troutwine was hit by a pitch, and Luke Ritter singled to load the bases. Keenan Eaton hit a hard grounder to first, and Jack Zoellner threw to second to force Ritter. The return throw by shortstop Dalton Bowers was wild; Rader scored on the play and Troutwine came in on the error.

Tanner Kirk and Mikel Mucha were retired to end the game.

Ryan Tinkham continued to belt Lobo pitchers. He had three hits, including two doubles. For the series, he is 4 for 8 (.500) with three doubles.

Notes: Three Shockers made their first starts — Josh DeBacker, Greyson Jenista and Luke Ritter. Ritter got two hits.… WSU has outhit New Mexico in the two games 28-25 but has been outscored 25-11.… Chase Williams (0-0, 3.38) will try to salvage the final game of the series today for WSU. New Mexico has not named a starter.… Kirk, who for the moment has solved WSU search for a leadoff hitter, is 4 for 11 in the series (.364).… Relievers Justin Seiwald and Reagan Biechler turned in scoreless innings. Both have yet to allow a run this season.… WSU stranded seven runners, four in scoring position. New Mexico stranded six, four in scoring position.… New Mexico was 6 for 12 batting with runners in scoring position.
