Fred’s farewell to Illinois

WSU guard Fred VanVleet had his usual contingent of family and friends from Rockford, Ill., about 100 miles away, in the crowd. They made up 30 or 40 of the WSU crowd that filled seats in Gentile Arena.

VanVleet made his last appearance in his home state and wrapped up his career 13-2 on the road against MVC teams. Despite all the attention, he didn’t consider it a warmup for Saturday’s final home game for the seniors.

“I don’t think we’re the type of guys that get into that kind of stuff,” he said. “Same preparation goes into each one.”

VanVleet scored seven points, making 1 of 6 shots and 4 of 5 free throws. He entered the game 11 for 11 from the field and 13 of 14 from the line in two previous games at Gentile Arena.

WSU coach Gregg Marshall saw no danger in Saturday’s game against Illinois State affecting Wednesday’s game.

“We’ll deal with that now,” he said. “We know they’re playing really, really well.”

Into the top 10

Ron Baker’s 15 first-half points moved him into WSU’s career top 10 list.

He passed Toure Murry (1,539, 2008-12) and Greg Carney (1,545, 1967-1970) to move into 10th place.

Worth noting

Loyola recognized seniors Jeff White, Montel James, Devon Turk and Earl Peterson before the game. Peterson left the game after injuring his left ankle early in the second half.… WSU leads the series 24-9 and has won eight in row, four in Chicago.
