Illinois State loss gives Wichita State share of MVC basketball crown

Wichita State added another piece to their age of dominance over the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Shockers clinched at least a share of their third MVC title in a row on Saturday, thanks to Northern Iowa’s win over second-place Illinois State. WSU (20-7, 13-2 MVC) can win the title outright on Sunday at Indiana State. A victory would also give WSU the No. 1 seed in the MVC Tournament.

WSU won three straight titles for the first time in program history and has won four of the past five with only former MVC member Creighton (2013) breaking up the run. Over those past five seasons, WSU is 76-11 in Valley regular-season games.

Southern Illinois won four straight MVC titles from 2002-05.

Northern Iowa defeated Illinois State 75-66 on Saturday, dropping the Redbirds to 11-5 in the MVC and into a tie with Evansville for second place.
