Shockers’ offense clicks in baseball opener

The Wichita Eagle

Wichita State baseball coach Todd Butler had a lot to be pleased about after his team’s 11-0 season-opening victory over Northern Colorado on Friday at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers used a three-run home run in the bottom half of the first inning by Gunnar Troutwine to ignite the scoring spark. WSU scored in three or more runs in three innings.

“I thought that three-run homer in the first inning by Troutwine kind of relaxed us a little bit,” Butler said. “Sam Tewes threw a great first inning for us and we were just hoping our guys weren’t nervous when heading to the plate there in that first inning.”

The Shockers scored four runs in the fifth inning to widen the gap to 8-0. Mikel Mucha knocked a double over the outstretched arms of Northern Colorado’s shortstop, scoring three Shockers.

“I knew with two strikes that I had to protect the plate and expect offspeed,” Mucha said. “I found a pitch that I liked and threw my arms out and made contact.”

Freshman Alec Bohm pinch-hit in the eighth inning. Bohm watched his first pitch go by for a ball, then on the second pitch he uncorked a two-run home run to left-center in his first collegiate at-bat.

“It was fun to see Alec Bohm in his first at bat as a freshman get the home run,” Butler said. “We felt like we put the game out of reach when Mikel had the double in the fifth, but it was good to see those guys step up in the eighth as well.”

Tewes, who hadn’t pitched in a Shocker uniform since last March after being sidelined by shoulder inflamation, picked up the win with six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out six batters.

“Pitching always sets the tone for the game,” Tewes said. “I kind of struggled with my command tonight, but in all, I was happy that we got the win. I was a little nervous at first, but once I got into the groove like I was used to, I felt good.”

Junior Zach Lewis got the save, pitching the final three innings. Lewis gave up one hit while striking out two Bears.

“I thought Zach Lewis came in and did a great job in relief of Sam,” Butler said. “We’ve got to work more on our control of our pitches, we’ve got plenty of games left this season to work on that.”

Mucha and Troutwine each finished with two of the Shockers’ eight hits.

Wichita State has won three straight home-openers. The teams play the second of the three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday. Junior right-hander Willie Schwanke will start for WSU.
