Ready for zones

Wichita State’s offense stalled against zone defenses against Illinois State and Northern Iowa.

Missouri State’s zone isn’t as imposing. The Bears lack Illinois State’s athletic ability and Northern Iowa’s discipline and long, rangy guards.

Plus, the Shockers have had plenty of time to prepare for zone defenses. They worked Missouri State’s zone with good passing by the big men.

“We got the ball to the high post quite a bit,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “We’re moving it crisply. We’re not being hesitant. We’re recognizing zone, we’re organizing against a zone and we’re attacking.”

Anton Grady made two jumpers from around the foul line. Shaq Morris scored at the rim after a pass from Rashard Kelly, positioned at the foul line. On the next play, Kelly got open for a baseline basket.

“It’s not really about plays, it’s more about attacking the open spots,” Kelly said. “When that happens, everybody starts making those type of plays.”

VanVleet a finalist

WSU guard Fred VanVleet is one of 10 finalists for the collegiate basketball Senior CLASS award for 2015-16.

The award is open to NCAA Division I seniors with "notable achievements in community, classroom, character and competition." The list of 30 will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February for nationwide voting. The winners, male and female, will be announced during the Final Four for both sports.

Worth noting

The Shockers made 59.1 percent of their shots to top 56.5 percent performance in a January win at Northern Iowa. They made 14 of 18 foul shots (77.8 percent), their best since making 24 of 27 (88.9 percent) at Evansville. The Bears made 15 of 19 foul shots, the fourth game in the past five for the opponent to outscore WSU.… VanVleet scored 15 points to reach 1,341 for his career and pass J.T. Durley (1,327) for 16th on WSU’s career list. Baker’s four steals give him 153 for his career, tied with Jamar Howard for fifth on WSU’s career list. He is three behind former teammate Tekele Cotton.… WSU’s Anton Grady passed to Brown for a dunk early in the game, his first assist since Jan. 17.… WSU surpassed its previous series record of 94 points against MSU in a 1999 double-overtime game. It made 39 of 66 shots, a season-best 59 percent.… The Shockers improved their series lead to 39-30 with their 12th straight win in the series. MSU coach Paul Lusk is 0-12 against WSU. Since a three-point win in overtime in 2014, WSU has won six games against the Bears by an average margin of 23.5 points.… MSU forward Chris Kendrix averaged 20.3 points in four previous games. He scored 11 on 4-of-12 shooting on Thursday.
