Back on track at home
Saturday’s home loss to Northern Iowa shook the Shockers, and with good reason.
They hadn’t experienced one since 2013, a span of 43 games.
“It was an odd phenomena to have a 43-game win streak within the city limits of Wichita,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall. “I felt like I almost let people down. It was an odd feeling. I needed a psychologist, and I had family and friends to help me through the last 36 hours.”
The Shockers still have their non-conference win streak, which is at 37. Wichita State hasn’t lost a non-conference home game since 2011, a 68-67 defeat against VCU in a BracketBusters game.
Baker feels better
Shockers guard Ron Baker stayed home Sunday from film study and a short shooting session with an illness.
By Monday, he felt better.
“I felt fine, just a little tired and weak today, but no stomach issues,” he said.
Baker scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, his high since scoring 21 at Northern Iowa on Jan. 20.
Not enough votes
Wichita State dropped out of both major basketball polls on Monday after losing two of three games.
The Shockers were No. 25 in last week’s Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll in a three-week return to the national rankings.
On Monday, they received 14 points in the AP poll of writers and broadcaster, ninth among schools receiving votes. In the coaches poll, the Shockers are third with 30 points. WSU’s fall started with a loss to Illinois State on Feb. 6. Saturday’s 53-50 home loss to Northern Iowa booted WSU from the top 25.
Worth noting
Baker won his 100th game at WSU, joining teammates Fred VanVleet (113) and Evan Wessel (102) in the top five of WSU’s career list. Baker also scored 13 point and has 1,503 for his career, No. 12 at WSU…. WSU center Anton Grady scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and is 17 of 23 from the field in the past five games…. Scouts from the Spurs, Jazz, Thunder, Timberwolves, Wizards and Mavericks were scheduled to attend Monday’s game.…New Mexico State forward Johnathon Wilkins is the brother of former Illinois State player John Wilkins. Their father, Jeff Wilkins, also played for Illinois State.…WSU unfurled the volleyball banners recognizing the 2015 MVC championships and the NCAA Tournament at halftime.
