Wichita State softball splits two on opening day
Wichita State’s softball team split a pair of games to begin the season, beating Colorado State 3-0 and losing to No. 24 Texas A&M 4-3 in eight innings on Friday in the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas.
Wichita State’s Jenni Brooks allowed two hits in five innings in the win over Colorado State. Katie Malone pitched two hitless innings for the save, then threw a complete game against A&M. The Aggies scored twice in the bottom of the eighth after WSU took a 3-2 lead in the top half of the inning with an unearned run.
In the opener, Paige Luellen tripled in Brittany Fortner, after her two-out double, for the game’s first run. Fortner drove in a run with her second double and Macklin Hitz smashed a pinch-hit home run in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.
WSU plays Colorado State (10 a.m.) and No. 7 UCLA (12:15 p.m.) on Saturday.
