Pick, roll, dunk
The timing and trust between Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet and center Shaq Morris keeps getting better.
In the first half, they stung the Redbirds for pick-and-roll baskets three times, twice for dunks. Conner Frankamp got in on the act by finding Morris rolling free to the basket for a layup and a 33-21 lead.
Morris finished the first half with nine points. VanVleet recorded four assists.
Illinois State’s switch to a zone defense in the second half took that weapon away. Morris missed two shots and scored one point in the second half.
Redbirds with the repeat
Illinois State is the first Valley team to beat the Shockers in consecutive games since Creighton in 2013.
Illinois State coach Dan Muller knows it starts with his team’s size and athletic ability. If it doesn’t match that of WSU, it is certainly close enough.
“They can overwhelm you athletically, especially in the league,” he said.
Last season, the Redbirds rallied from nine points down in the second half to win 65-62 in the MVC Tournament. On Saturday, WSU led by 16 early in the second half.
“I was proud of how we rallied back,” Redbirds guard Paris Lee said. “We didn’t put our heads down. Once we had our heads up, we made shots.”
Worth noting
Saturday’s game drew a crowd of 8,284, a season high.…WSU lost at Redbird Arena for the first time since 2009. The loss ended an 11-game regular-season win streak over Illinois State.
