Different half, different story
Indiana State guard Brenton Scott came to Koch Arena on a roll after scoring 30 and 25 points in his past two games. Even WSU’s defenders didn’t slow him down in the first half, when he scored 16 points and made all four of his three-pointers.
“He was lighting it up in the first half,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “He was (Evansville’s) D.J. Balentine, he was Anthony Beane. In fact, he did more damage than either one of those guys did against us. Very talented scorer. And he scores in a lot of ways.”
In the first half, Scott may have surprised his defenders with one or two unlikely pull-up threes. He snuck into the corner for a wide-open three late in the half. In the second half, Zach Brown and Markis McDuffie rarely gave him an opening.
Scott didn’t score until 14:41 remained in the game and didn’t make a field goal until almost a minute later. He didn’t take another three-pointer in the game.
With Scott neutralized, Indiana State’s offense faltered. And when WSU started to build its lead, the Sycamores forced some shots and got away from their offensive plans. When their offense slumped, so did their defense.
“We hung our heads a little bit,” Indiana State coach Greg Lansing said. “We’ve got to have guys come together a little bit more and believe the plan, believe the system.”
It’s been fun, but not really
Lansing has always been a fan of WSU’s Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, quick with a compliment regardless of how many points they might score.
On Sunday, VanVleet continued his strong play against the Sycamores. VanVleet, in eight games, is 40 of 79 from the field and 15 of 27 from three-point range. He has 30 assists and nine turnovers.
Baker, who was 14 of 49 from the field against Indiana State in five previous meetings, made 4 of 6 shots and scored 16 points, matching his career-best against the Sycamores.
“I enjoy watching them play,” Lansing said. “I’m ready for them to get the heck out of here, but I enjoy watching them play because they play the right way.”
Worth noting
Indiana State’s Laquarious Page ran to the scorer’s table in the first half, took off his warmup top and discovered he didn’t have a jersey on. He sprinted to the locker room and checked in a few minutes later, wearing No. 32.… Scouts from the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons watched Sunday’s game.… Baker had three assists to tie Craig Steven (1998-2003) for 17th on WSU’s career list at 290.
