WSU women still winless in MVC play
Wichita State’s women’s basketball team led into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on, losing to Loyola 60-55 on Friday night in Chicago and remaining winless in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Junior TaQuandra Mike led WSU (3-13, 0-5 MVC) with 17 points and freshman Rangie Bessard added 16.
The Shockers used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to go ahead 15-6, a lead they retained for the rest of the half. WSU committed 15 turnovers in the half, but overcame that by making 10 of 17 shots while building a 29-24 halftime edge. Bessard scored 11 first-half points and Mike added 10.
WSU never extended its lead beyond five points in the third quarter but only trailed for one possession in the period. A three-pointer by Loyola’s Nieka Wheeler with 25 seconds left tied the score at 39.
Loyola (8-7, 4-0) finally gained contol in the final period. Bessard fouled out with 4:01 to play and WSU down 50-46 when she was called for an offensive foul, and the Shockers never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
