Wichita State’s VanVleet earns weekly MVC honor

Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet earned Missouri Valley Conference player of the week honors after the Shockers defeated Evansville and Southern Illinois.

VanVleet averaged 11 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals in the victories. He totaled 15 assists and three turnovers. Against SIU, he grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Against Evansville, he scored 16 points and had a season-high nine assists. The wins put WSU (10-5, 4-0 MVC) in first place in the MVC.

VanVleet, a senior from Rockford, Ill., earned the award for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career.

WSU, which received seven votes in Monday’s Associated Press top 25, plays at Missouri State (6-10, 2-2) at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Bears guard Dequon Miller was named newcomer of the week after he made shots in the final seconds to defeat Northern Iowa and Loyola.
