On the boards
Southern Illinois out-rebounded WSU in three meetings last season, a fact that the Shockers heard often during preparation. That streak ended with WSU’s 40-25 edge, one than included 15 offensive rebounds.
“It was brought up a lot,” WSU forward Zach Brown. “They’re a tough team. They hustle. They go after every loose ball. That’s what gotten them to where they’re at. For us to come out here and do what we were able to do is really good.”
WSU’s rebounding edge sparked a strong shooting performance. With guard Fred VanVleet grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds, he often started the break and the Salukis missed assignments and surrendered open shots.
“Give the credit to the bigs and Evan (Wessel) for checking out and holding their guys off,” VanVleet said. “I was able to clean it up. That’s the only reason I got those rebounds, is those guys did an excellent job checking out.”
With SIU crashing the boards hard, the Shockers took advantage to push the ball back at them when they grabbed defensive rebounds.
“They rebound so well, despite their size,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “They sell out on the offensive glass. So, if you can clean the glass.… and especially when (VanVleet) gets it, there’s no outlet pass.”
Even with numerous open shots, Marshall wants his players to run harder. He recreated one break in which he saw Zach Brown jogging, yelled at him to sprint and Brown got an open shot.
“The ball meets him at the basket,” Marshall said. “Fred’s going to find you. His vision is incredible. They’ve got to run and cut and sprint to score.”
Cooldown in Carbondale
SIU entered the game shooting 38 percent from three-point range, 50 percent in three Missouri Valley Conference games.
Those percentages will drop after WSU held the Salukis to a season-low one three-pointer on 11 attempts.
“They just took us out of everything defensively,” SIU coach Barry Hinson said. “Good shooting teams always play off confidence and we didn’t have any confidence.”
The Shockers held SIU to 17 baskets and created 17 turnovers. In four MVC games, WSU held opponents to 72 baskets and created 71 turnovers.
Brown and freshman Markis McDuffie combined to defend SIU guard Anthony Beane, who scored 15 points. With Beane under wraps, SIU’s offense struggled. Bola Olaniyan added 11 points, the only other Saluki in double figures. Starters Sean O’Brien, Mike Rodriguez and Tyler Smithpeters combined to go 3 for 13 from the field.
“(Beane) ends up with 15, but eight or 10 of those had to be in mop-up duty,” Marshall said. “He’s a great player and I have the utmost respect for him. He’s playing at another level, but Zach Brown and Markis McDuffie did a wonderful job on him.”
Worth noting
WSU defeated SIU for the sixth straight time and the third straight in Carbondale. The 25-point margin of victory is the largest in 43 games at SIU Arena. It was SIU’s biggest loss since a 36-point loss at Illinois State in 2013… The Shockers are 4-0 in the Valley for the fourth straight season. They are 40-7 in MVC road games over the past six seasons.… WSU guard Ron Baker scored 18 points and has 1,368 for his career to rank No. 14 at WSU after passing Jamie Thompson (1,359).… The sellout crowd of 8,284 was the first since 2014 and the 25th in SIU Arena’s 51 seasons.… SIU guard Anthony Beane scored 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting in a win over Northern Iowa. In the past two games, he is 6 of 24 from the field.… Marshall improved to 214-81 at WSU. He trails Ralph Miller (1951-64) by six victories to top WSU’s list.… WSU guard Conner Frankamp made 4 of 7 threes and is 13 of 27 since starting his season 1 for 7.
