Wamukota suspended
Bush Wamukota, a senior center, did not play on Tuesday and is suspended indefinitely, WSU coach Gregg Marshall said.
“You can call it breaking team rules, it was an academic nature,” Marshall said. “I don’t condone something that he did. He’s going to be out for awhile. He’s suspended through Christmas.”
Wamukota sat on the bench during the game. He played Saturday at Seton Hall, although a stiff back kept him out of the second half. He averages 2.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 12.3 minutes a game.
WSU freshman guard Ty Taylor sat out with a shoulder injury. Taylor said his right shoulder popped out during Monday’s practice and he expects to play when the Shockers play New Mexico State on Dec. 28.
Shockers to Colorado
Wichita State will play at Colorado State next season in the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge.
The Shockers make their first trip to Fort Collins since 1983 on Dec. 3, 2016. The Rams, coached by Larry Eustachy, are 7-5 this season, which includes an 84-78 win at Northern Iowa and Saturday’s 61-56 loss to Kansas State.
WSU is 4-1 in the challenge series, which resumed this season after running from 2009-12. The Shockers defeated UNLV 56-50 earlier this season at Koch Arena.
Next season, nine of the 10 games will take place on Dec. 3.
The Mountain West went 6-4 in this season’s challenge and is 28-17 overall vs. the MVC in challenge games.
Baker climbs charts
Ron Baker made 2 of 4 three-pointers to continue his climb up WSU’s career lists.
His 17 points moved him to 17th on WSU’s career list with 1,320 points, passing P.J. Cousinard (1,303) and Paul Miller (1,317). Ron Harris (1,322) is 16th.
His 536 three-point attempts are tied for second with Terrell Benton. Baker owns 202 made threes, second on WSU’s career list after passing Sean Ogirri (200).
Randy Burns is first with 248.
Worth noting
WSU took a 2-1 series lead against Nevada…. The Wolf Pack, which leads the nation with an average of 7.3 blocks, blocked five shots… All 13 available Shockers played. The blowout allowed Marshall to limit Baker to a season-low 19 minutes. …. WSU forward Zach Brown made 11 of 12 free throws after entering the game 21 of 34 on the season from the line…. The Wolf Pack allowed its most points since a 98-42 loss at Colorado State last season. WSU is the first team to shoot better than 46 percent against Nevada and it is the first to out-rebound the Wolf Pack (38-33) this season…. With two steals, WSU’s Fred VanVleet has 179 for his career and is one behind Tour Murry for second on WSU’s career list. VanVleet scored 13 points, moving into 30th place with 1,141 points.
