Up to the challenge
WSU improved to 4-1 in the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge series, two of those wins over UNLV at Koch Arena.
This season, the Mountain West leads the series 4-3 with three games remaining — Drake at Nevada, Bradley at Boise State and Evansville at Fresno State.
The conferences first matched up from 2009-12 with the Mountain West taking a 22-13 edge. UNLV is 3-2 against MVC schools.
Take care of the ball
Wichita State committed nine turnovers, which kept the Rebels from their favorite mode of scoring on fast breaks. They entered the game fourth nationally by forcing 19.2 turnovers and 12th in steals at 9.6 a game.
“Against a team that presses a lot, I was pleased with our ballhandling,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said.
Without transition baskets, UNLV’s offense had to figure out ways to score in the half-court against the Shockers. They rarely worked free for open shots and their shooting accuracy showed it. Without baskets, UNLV was unable to set up its press.
“We wanted to press much earlier, but you can't do that if you aren't scoring points, which we weren't doing in the first half,” UNLV coach Dave Rice said.
Worth noting
Interim athletic director Darron Boatright presented Marshall with a game ball marking his 400th victory, Nov. 21 against Emporia State at Koch Arena. …WSU leads the series 3-1 and is 3-0 against UNLV in Wichita.
