Another century

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall joined Mississippi State coach Ben Howland and former Washington and Washington State coach Marv Harshman with 400 wins, tied for No. 119 on the NCAA Division I career list.

To break into the top 100, he needs to win 23 more games this season and pass Bill Foster, who coached at Duke and South Carolina, and owns 422 wins.

At WSU, Marshall is rolling up on Ralph Miller, who went 220-133 from 1951-1965. Marshall is 206-77 at WSU.

Tough time after Tulsa

Emporia State coach Shaun Vandiver saw the Shockers lose at Tulsa on Tuesday and knew that meant bad things for the Hornets.

“I was telling the guys, ‘They’re not going to play angry, they’re going to play pissed,’ ” Vandiver said. “They came out, they got that bad taste out of their mouth. When you’re going against that type of size and length and strength, it’s overwhelming. They did a great job of playing Shocker brand of basketball.”

The Hornets trailed 38-13 at halftime. They played better in the second half, making 15 of 29 shots and cutting WSU’s lead from 30 to 16.

“They had us outside our element, but in the second half I thought we handled it,” Vandiver said. “It’s human nature — they’re up by almost 30 and they relaxed a little bit.”

Foul trouble ruined WSU’s flow early in the second half and the Shockers made 12 of 30 shots in the final 20 minutes. The Hornets shot five free throws in the first half and 13 in the second.

“In the second half, we became a little more stagnant,” Marshall said. “Hopefully, we developed a little confidence back going to Florida. We’re going to need it.”

Worth noting

Marshall gave Ron Baker a plaque recognizing his spot on the United States team in the Pan Am Games in July before the game … WSU improved to 42-28 against the Hornets. Marshall is 6-0 against NCAA Division II teams at WSU … The Shockers won their 34th straight home game … Baker has 1,203 career points after scoring 23 on Saturday. He ranks No. 24 at WSu after passing Cal Bruton (1,184) and Robert Elmore (1,186) … Freshman Landry Shamet started his first game, in place of injured senior Fred VanVleet.
