Baker, VanVleet on Wooden list
Wichita State seniors Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet were listed on the Wooden Award preseason top 50 for the second straight season.
The Wooden advisory board will cut the list to 25 leading candidates in January and 20 in February before releasing a final ballot of 15. The winner of voting will be announced on April 8.
All recruits are official
Wichita State announced that it received letters of intent from guard Daishon Smith (6-foot-1), a sophomore at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College, guard C.J. Keyser (6-3) of Brewster (N.H.) Academy and forward Darral Willis (6-9), a sophomore at Pearl River (Fla.) Community College.
Smith and Keyser, who played at Sunrise Christian Academy last season, signed Wednesday and Willis joined them on Friday after choosing WSU over Arizona State.
WSU coach Gregg Marshall commented on each in a news release:
▪ Keyser “is explosive, can play a multitude of positions on the perimeter and profiles as a lockdown defender,” Marshall said.
▪ “Daishon is the type of point guard who has been successful in our system,” he said. “He has good size, is explosive with the ball and is extremely athletic. He's a guy who can score and also be a playmaker for others, depending on the situation, and he affects the game with his defense.”
▪ “We think (Willis) can come in play big minutes at the four,” Marshall said. “He does everything well. He can shoot, he can drive, and he can score facing or with his back to the basket. He runs, rebounds, defends and comes from a winning program.”
Those three will join guard Peyton Allen, a transfer from Texas A&M, as additions for 2016-17. Allen is redshirting this season while he practices with the Shockers.
Nine points in 77 seconds
It wasn’t clear what VanVleet was capable of for most of the first half. His sore hamstring kept him from performing his usual offensive duties.
His burst late in the half showed he could still change the game. He made three three-pointers in the final 1:17, capping the run with a buzzer-beater to give WSU a 31-30 lead and celebrated as he ran toward the locker room.
“Being limited, I wasn’t really being aggressive,” he said. “I had to shoot one, Hail Mary at the buzzer, shot clock. That gave me a little shot of confidence. The ball-game was going their way at that point in time, so it was a good momentum shift.”
Worth noting
The loss denied WSU coach Gregg Marshall his 400th coaching victory in 18 seasons … Tulsa defeated WSU for the first time in seven meetings against Marshall-coached team … Tulsa snapped a 23-game losing streak against ranked opponents and defeated a top-10 opponent for the 17th time … The Shockers slipped to 47-6 against non-conference opponents since the 2010-11 season.
