Two recruits sign letters with Wichita State men’s basketball

The first day of the signing period passed quietly for Wichita State with a whole lot of waiting.

According to Brewster (N.H.) Academy coach Jason Smith on Twitter, guard C.J. Keyser signed his national letter of intent and sent it to his family. Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College guard Daishon Smith said that he signed his letter on Wednesday.

WSU coaches cannot comment until the compliance department receives the paperwork, signed by the athlete and parents.

Coaches also waited on a decision by Pearl River (Miss.) Community College forward Darrlyn Willis, who was expected to choose between WSU and Arizona State on Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon turned into Wednesday evening with no announcement.

Late Wednesday, Pearl River assistant coach Scott Sommer said Willis will announce his decision at 2:30 p.m. Friday with WSU and Arizona State his top two choices. Marquette, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State are also finalists.

Willis (6-8, 215), who recently visited Arizona State, is averaging 16 points and 9.7 rebounds in No. 12 Pearl River’s 3-0 start. Last season, he averaged 13.8 points and 7.1 rebounds a game, while making 62.6 percent of his shots and 75.5 percent of his foul shots. Willis, from Madison, Wis., earned All-Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College and All-Region 23 honors.

Memphis wing signs with WSU women — Memphis Overton’s Kayla Williams (6-1) averaged 15 points and four rebounds as a junior, earning spots on all-regional and All-Shelby County teams. WSU received her paperwork Wednesday.

“She has a natural scorer’s mentality at the three position with the ability to manufacture shots and to knock down the three,” WSU coach Jody Adams said in news release.

Baseball signings on Twitter — Several baseball players announced their signing with WSU on Twitter, including Leavenworth pitcher Tommny Barnhouse, Nation Ford (S.C.) lefty Drake Durham, Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North third baseman Maison Stites and Sunnyvale (Texas) lefty Nathan Hawkins.

▪  Middle blocker Lauren Hinrichs, from Doniphan-Trumbull (Neb.), announced her signing with WSU’s volleyball team on Twitter, as did middle Emma Wright of Sunnyslope (Ariz.).

Softball adds five athletes — Catcher Madison Perrigan, left-handed pitcher Bailey Klitzke, outfielder Kiersten Otte, utility player Brigitta Doherty and outfielder Morgan Palmer signed with the softball team.

Perrigan, from Mustang (Okla.) High, hit .400 and earned all-conference and all-state honors. Klitzke, from Desert Ridge (Ariz.) High, earned All-Gilbert City honors three times. Otte is from Troy Buchanan High. Doherty, from Cypress (Calif.) High, is a three-time Empire League All-Academic team member.

Palmer, from Shawnee, Okla., was named an All-Region 2 left fielder at Seminole (Okla.) State as a freshman. She hit .388 with 19 stolen bases.

Former Shockers find homes — Guard Corey Henderson Jr., who played in 28 games last season for WSU’s men’s basketball team, signed with Tulsa. Henderson is a sophomore at Blinn (Texas) College.

Former WSU pitcher Jeb Bargfeldt signed with Miami (Fla.). Bargfeldt played last season at WSU and transferred to Cisco (Texas) College. As a freshman, he went 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 12 starts.
