On the honor roll
WSU guards Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker are among 50 players on the Naismith Trophy watch list released on Wednesday.
The list will be cut to 30 in February and 10 semifinalists will be named on March 6. The winner will be announced during the Final Four. VanVleet was a semifinalist last season.
They are also on the watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Wooden Award, both Player of the Year honors. VanVleet is one of 36 players on the Bob Cousy Award list, for the nation’s top point guard.
Vitale comes to Koch Arena
ESPN announced that Dick Vitale will broadcast Wichita State’s game on Dec. 16 against Alabama at Koch Arena.
The game will be televised on ESPN2 with Rich Hollenberg doing play by play.
ESPN’s most prominent college basketball voice kept up on the Shockers during their rise to prominence. In November, Vitale ranked WSU’s backcourt fifth in the nation on ESPN.com. In 2013, he picked the Shockers to upset No. 1 Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament.
Vitale, 75, signed a three-year extension with ESPN and although the network took him off the prime-time Saturday games, he told USA Today he wanted to continue working a full schedule in October.
Worth noting
Former Shocker Toure Murry, recalled this week by the Utah Jazz from the NBA Developmental League, ate dinner with the team on Tuesday. The Jazz played Toronto on Wednesday.… Utah returns the game at Intrust Bank Arena on Dec. 12, 2015, its first appearance in Wichita since a 58-36 win in 1991. Utah opened what is now Koch Arena with a 73-51 win on Dec. 3, 1955.… WSU committed 12 fouls in the first half to Utah’s three. The Utes, however, went 7 of 12 from the line.
