Blow back on Tulsa
On MTXE throwback day, Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet made their case to join past Tulsa-killers such as Xavier McDaniel and Aubrey Sherrod.
Baker is averaging 16 points in three meetings with 13-of-23 shooting from three-point range. VanVleet averages 17 points, making 17 of 31 shots, with 20 assists and four turnovers.
Baker, after making 2 of 9 threes in his first two games of 2014-15, is 10 of 17 in the next two. He made 6 of 11 threes Saturday, 4 of 7 in the first half.
“Sometimes as a shooter you try and aim it, or slow down, or quicken your release, and I think the biggest thing is, in your mind, just to let it go,” he said. “Let it float up there and make your shot.”
Tulsa targeted Baker in its scouting report.
“He’s the key player to their program, because he never gets sped up and he always plays at his pace,” Tulsa guard James Woodard said. “He kind of got off the first half and got open shots and he knocked them down.”
In the future
Wichita State and Tulsa renewed the series in 2010 and played every season since. The contract ends after next season’s game at Tulsa and both schools appear interested in more.
Saturday’s meeting was the 124th, which ranks third in frequency for WSU behind Drake and Bradley. WSU is first on Tulsa’s list.
“Both sides have expressed interest in extending (the series),” WSU senior associate athletic director Darron Boatright said.
Tulsa coach Frank Haith got his first taste of the rivalry.
“It’s great for Tulsa, and hopefully it’s great for Wichita State,” he said. “We’re going to get better, and I applaud what (WSU coach Gregg Marshall) has done here.”
The seventh straight win over Tulsa represents WSU’s longest win streak in the series. Tulsa won 13 in a row from 1993-2002.
Tulsa and WSU met twice a season from 1945-96, when both were in the Missouri Valley.
On the floor
VanVleet takes more than his share of hard falls after drives to the basket, one reason he leads WSU with 21 foul shots. On Saturday, he took a hard foul in the second half and it took him several seconds to rise.
“I took a knee to my thigh in practice (Friday) and right there I fell and hit the floor pretty hard,” he said. “That big kid fell on my leg and didn’t make it feel much better. It was enough to do some damage, but I’m doing fine.”
Worth noting
Former North High star Conner Frankamp watched his second WSU game from Section 123. Frankamp, who left the Kansas basketball program on Oct. 30, watched WSU practice on Friday. He has also visited Creighton and Colorado. … Park Hill (Mo.) guard Landry Shamet, who signed with WSU earlier this month, attended the game. … Tulsa committed 10 turnovers, fewest by a Shocker opponent this season. … WSU went 4-0 in November and hasn’t lost in the month since a 2011 game against Temple in Puerto Rico. … WSU’s bench scored a season-low 12 points.
