WSU women struggle on offense in 56-39 loss to Florida Gulf Coast

The Wichita State women’s basketball team struggled on offese and lost to Florida Gulf Coast 56-39 in the first game of the Paradise Jam on Thursday in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

WSU was held to 13 points in the first half —and that included a three-pointer by Aundra Stovall at the halftime buzzer. The Shockers made 5 of 26 shots in the first half and went into the locker room trailing 26-13. Florida Gulf Coast was only slightly better from the field in the first half, making 7 of 19 shots, but outscored WSU 9-1 at the free-throw line.

Florida Gulf Coast scored the first six points of the second half to take a 32-13 lead, and the margin grew as large as 29 points.

The Shockers finished the game with 20 turnovers and made just 15 shots.

Florida Gulf Coast has won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season title four consecutive seasons and played in two of the last three NCAA Tournaments.

Wichita State will play Ohio State on Friday. The Buckeyes beat Clemson 86-77 on Thursday.

K-State cancels again — Kansas State’s final scheduled game at the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was canceled. The Wildcats were supposed to play LSU, but for the second consecutive day K-State’s game was canceled due to a facility conflict. K-State lost a scheduled game Wednesday against Santa Clara.
